    Schenkman-ME-1, Struck in Iron

1862 Merrimac Token, Schenkman-ME-1, Bertram-C862-115a, MS61 NGC. Iron, 26 mm. A rare Civil War token, heavily sought-after as the only one struck in iron. Holed at 12 o'clock. A surprisingly well preserved example with slate-gray surfaces. The obverse legend reads: THE FIRST IRON CLAD / 1862, around a depiction of the C.S.S. Virginia. The Virginia was an iron-clad Confederate ship made from the iron hull of the U.S.S. Merrimack. The reverse of the token reads: MADE FROM THE ARMOUR PLATE OF THE MERRIMAC.
