    Description

1834 Crosslet 4 Classic Half Eagle
    Uncirculated Details

1834 $5 Crosslet 4 -- Altered Surfaces -- Genuine PCGS. Unc. Details. Breen-6503, McCloskey 5-D, R.4. According to Garrett and Guth, this issue is approximately ten times scarcer than its Plain 4 counterpart of the same date; from a combined total mintage of 657,460 coins. Population figures from NGC and PCGS, however, indicate that Garrett and Guth may have overestimated the percentage of Crosslet 4 survivors. More than 3,000 of the Plain 4 coins have been rated, while a mere total of 184 Crosslet 4 examples have been graded by the two major services combined (5/14).

This example displays honey-gold toning imbued with undertones of pale green, which may be artificially enhanced, according to PCGS. The strike definition is bold overall, with just the slightest weakness noted on Liberty's hair curls. A brief, hair-thin pinscratch on the upper right reverse field is the only mentionable surface mark.(Registry values: P3) (NGC ID# 25RU, PCGS# 8172)
