Description

1834 Half Eagle, MS62 CAC
Superb HM-6, Very Scarce

1834 $5 Plain 4, HM-6, R.4, MS62 PCGS. CAC. Late die state of HM-6 with an advanced reverse die crack through NITED extending to the rim at N and D. Daryl Haynor analyzed die marriage survival data and determined the HM-6 variety comprises only 3% of all 1834 Classic Head half eagles, establishing the very scarce R.4 rarity rating. The HM-6 die pairing is attributed by a Block 8 with a triple punched plain 4, while the eagle has a tongue with the 5 being left of the feather.

The Coinage Act of 1834 decreased the gold content by 6.26 percent proportionately for United State gold coin denominations, while the ratio of silver to gold was changed from 15 to 1 to a revised ratio of 16 to 1. The intent was "to promote the diffusion of gold through the circulation" which had occurred in only limited amounts with the old tenor gold. Chief Engraver William Kneass completed the new Classic Head design, which extensively circulated throughout commerce.

This is a wonderful example of the first year for the Classic Head five dollar design. Both central and peripheral design elements are well struck, with just a touch of striking weakness in the hair curls adjacent to the ear. The stars are sharply defined, and the eagle feathers display complete definition. Rich orange-gold toning evenly blankets the surfaces, and frosty luster radiates throughout the coin. Only small contact marks are visible. The lovely eye appeal and technical quality justifies the CAC approval for this terrific coin.
