Description
Mint State 1834 Plain 4 Half Eagle
1834 $5 Plain 4 MS61 NGC. First Head, Breen-6501, McCloskey 3-A, R.3. A splendid mint state example that exhibits highly lustrous honey gold surfaces. Slight weakness is noted at the center of the obverse. This is a scarce variety that may be one of the two or three finest known. Researcher John McCloskey, who is well-known to members of the Liberty Seated Collectors Club, presented an article in a past American Numismatic Society Coinage of the America's Conference discussing the Classic Head gold varieties. We understand he is in the process of updating and revising this work for upcoming publication. Now would be a great time to begin a collection of these coins by variety.(#8171) (Registry values: P1)Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# E2KE, PCGS# 8171, GSID# 8856)
