Description

1834 Plain 4 Half Eagle, MS62
Nicely Preserved for the Grade

1834 $5 Plain 4 MS62 NGC. Second Head, Breen-6502, McCloskey 4-C, R.2. The 1834 is a popular first-year type in short-lived Classic Head series. Examples are made even more desirable by their often semiprooflike surfaces, as seen here. This Uncirculated half eagle show a nice degree of preservation for the grade, and well-frosted orange-gold devices contrast beautifully against the light honey and yellow-gold patina in the fields. The strike through the centers of each side is more sharply executed than on many survivors of this underrated issue, which circulated extensively and scarcely appears in mint condition.(Registry values: P1)
