Description

1834 Classic Head Five Dollar, MS63 PCGS

1834 $5 Plain 4 MS63 PCGS. Second Head. McCloskey 2-A, Breen-6502, R.2. The small, plain 4 in the date is triple punched--a diagnostic feature of this die marriage. This is an attractive coin for the grade with frosty luster that thins to modest brightness in the fields. There are some scattered abrasions on the reverse that seem to account for the MS63 designation, but none are sizeable or individually distracting. The bluntness of strike on the obverse hair curls over Liberty's brow and the left center of the reverse eagle is a not uncommon feature for survivors of this first-year Classic Half Eagle. A relatively obtainable date that is always in demand among type collectors.
