Exceptional Reflective MS64 ★ 1834 Classic Five

1834 $5 Plain 4 MS64 ★ NGC. CAC. First Head, Breen 6501, McCloskey 3-B, R.2. Congress acted on June 28, 1834 to reduce both the weight and fineness of United States gold coins to bring their intrinsic value into line with their face value. A new design was needed to distinguish the new tenor gold coins from the old. Chief engraver William Kneass created the Classic Head design to be used on all United States gold coins.
Nine varieties of 1834 Classic Head half eagles have been identified by Dr. John McCloskey. The present coin is variety 3-B. Obverse 3 is identified by characteristics of the numerals in the date. The numeral 1 has a long, sloping serif at the top. The 4 is distant from the curl with a crossbar that extends the same distance beyond the upright as the base. On reverse B, the eagle has no tongue and the 5 is nearly centered under the arrow feather. Although this is a common variety, it is unusual to find an example as nice as the present coin.
This coin has great eye appeal. The strike is just a little weak at the center of both sides, as almost always seen, with all the surrounding elements sharply outlined. The surfaces are brightly reflective and have only a moderate number of abrasions. The luxuriant yellow-gold color is virtually unblemished.(Registry values: P1)
