Description

1834 Plain 4 Half Eagle, MS64
McCloskey 4-C, Highest Collectible Grade

1834 $5 Plain 4 MS64 NGC. Second Head, Breen-6502, McCloskey 4-C, R.2. This Classic Head variety features a Block 8 and Plain 4 in the date that nearly touches Liberty's curl. Jeff Garrett and Ron Guth explain that this is the most accessible issue in the series to locate in Mint State, with a number of survivors in the MS62 to MS64 range. This is at the very limit of what can be considered collectible for the 1834 half eagle. Finer examples are extremely rare and can fetch well in-excess of two or three times that of an attractive near-Gem. The star centers are clear and the eagle's feathers are crisp. Softness is limited to the middle curls and the left side of the shield. Bright yellow-gold surfaces display a hint of reflectivity in the fields with swirling luster around the edges. Census: 44 in 64 (2 in 64 ★ ), 7 finer (11/17).(Registry values: P1)
