1834 Classic Half Eagle, MS64
Plain 4, McCloskey 4-C

1834 $5 Plain 4 MS64 NGC. Second Head, Breen-6502, McCloskey 4-C, R.4. Ken Bressett Signature holder honoring the Guide Book of United States Coins. The 4 in the date appears to touch Liberty's hair curl, and the 8 is the so-called "block" style. The obverse die is cracked from the border between stars 6 and 7 to the hair curls. A scarce variety and the only use of the obverse die. The reverse die also appears with obverse dies 2 and 3. At ClassicHalfEagles.com, nine reported varieties of 1834 Classic Head half eagles are known from five obverse dies and four reverse dies. This well struck example has original honey-gold color over semi-reflective surfaces, and is clean for the grade. A shallow pinscratch above the eagle's beak performs duty as a pedigree marker. Census: 45 in 64 (1 in 64+, 2 in 64★ ), 9 finer (10/19).(Registry values: P1)
