Description

Prooflike MS 64 1834 Classic Five

1834 Plain 4 MS 64 NGC. After decades of American gold coins not circulating because their melted value exceeded their face value, in 1834 Congress finally decided to reduce the weight of U.S. gold coins. Very little of the old tenor gold was turned in for the newer, lighter ones but the "Classic" coins were eagerly sought out and circulated widely. More than 650,000 half eagles were struck and distributed in 1834 with the new androgynous design. However, a few were saved as mementoes and when one does encounter a high grade Classic quarter eagle or half eagle, it is usually dated 1834.
This piece is sharply struck on each side and the fields are bright and prooflike. The only noticeable abrasions are a few light scuffs in the left obverse field and a shallow scrape before and after star 13. Slight haziness in the reverse fields. An exceptional piece of Classic gold. From the Green Mountain Collection.
