Description

1835 Classic Five Dollar Gold, AU58
HM-4, Nearly Mint State

1835 $5 HM-4, R.6, AU58 NGC. The HM-4 die marriage is one of four rare varieties that make up the core of nine 1835 die marriages, creating a formidable challenge for any half eagle variety collector. HM-4, 5, 6, and 7 each have an estimated survival of no more than 20 examples, with HM-5 slightly scarcer than the other three die pairs. This near-Mint HM-4 is one of two examples in The John W. McCloskey Collection. Both are certified AU58 NGC, and neither outshines the other. The current example is bright and lustrous with a needle-sharp strike on both sides. Only tiny marks and faint abrasions pepper the brilliant, yellow-gold surfaces.
