1835 HM-5 Classic Head Five Dollar, MS62
Rarest 1835 Variety, Series Key

1835 $5 HM-5, High R.6, MS62 NGC. The leaves almost touch the base of U in UNITED, paired with the Tall 1 obverse to define the HM-5 die pair. Struck from dies that were also used to produce a handful of rare 1835 half eagle proofs, the HM-5 circulation strikes are almost as rare as the proofs. Daryl Haynor writes in United States Classic Gold Coins 1834-1839, "This is the rarest die marriage for the 1835 half eagle ... and may be the rarest marriage in the entire series. The 1836 HM-9 Script 8 is the worthy challenger for top rarity honors." HM-5's High R.6 rarity rating is thought to be R.7 by some researchers.

The reverse die cracked while striking the HM-5 coins, and soon failed. It was replaced for the HM-6 coins, only to have the obverse break and fall out of service. The Haynor/McCloskey reference estimates just 15 HM-5 coins survive, including at least three proofs. Mint State circulation strikes are extremely rare, with only three such coins confirmed including this one. The surfaces are largely prooflike, with a modicum of tiny abrasions and a touch of field frost. The shield recesses are fully mirrored, as are most areas along the margins. A needle-sharp strike shows no weakness at Liberty's curls or the eagle's plumage. The coin is struck from a middle die state, with the reverse die crack only partially formed in the field left of the eagle's beak and extending to below the left shield corner.
