Description

1836 HM-4 Five Dollar, MS63
Block 8, Original Toning

1836 $5 Block 8, HM-4, High R.3, MS63 PCGS. The 1836 five dollar has a substantial mintage, but survivors are distributed over nine die marriages, and none of the varieties can be regarded as common. HM-4 has a tall 1 in the date that shows repunching on the upright above the flag. STATES is widely spaced, with the letter A entered too high. The present piece displays butter-gold centers and rich apricot-gold borders. The strike is good, and only delicate marks on the upper reverse field deny an even finer grade. Classic gold coins are scarce in better Mint State grades, since few collectors could afford to set aside examples during the Hard Times era.
