Description

1836 Classic Half Eagle, AU50
HM-1, Second-Rarest Die Pair

1836 $5 HM-1, R.6, AU50 NGC. Exceeded in rarity only by the renowned 1836 HM-9 die marriage, this HM-1 example retains substantial mint luster and sharply defined About Uncirculated devices. The large mintage required nine die marriages, yet the 1836 is scarce-to-rare across the board regardless of die pair. A complete set of 1836 die varieties is one of the premier challenges in a set of Classic Head gold. Obtaining a pleasing About Uncirculated HM-1 is one of the highest hurdles to completing such a set. This notable example shows emerging radial die cracks on both the obverse and reverse, above star 5 on the obverse and through E in UNITED on the reverse. A short mark behind Liberty's highest back curl is the only contact of individual mention. Attractive red-gold surfaces are otherwise lightly abraded, with exceptionally bold eye appeal.
