Description

1836 HM-1 Half Eagle, VF35
Choice for the Grade

1836 $5 HM-1, R.6, VF35 NGC. The initial 1836 variety is also one of the rarest. HM-1 is the so-called "First Head" variety (Breen 6507), with a wide portrait and an extra crease in Liberty's top hair ribbon. Liberty's mouth is closed and has a determined expression. The high 6 in the date leans left. Perhaps as few as 20 HM-1 examples survive, exceeded in rarity only by the R.7 1836 HM-9. This Choice VF coin displays a strong radial die crack above star 5, as often seen for the variety. Mostly clear fields show only widely separated small marks and surround smoothly worn central devices. Some luster remains.
