Description

1836 Classic Half Eagle, AU50
Rare HM-9 Die Pair
The McCloskey Discovery Coin

1836 $5 HM-9, R.7, AU50 NGC. With only six confirmed examples, the HM-9 variety is the rarest Classic half eagle of any date or die marriage. John McCloskey discovered the variety at a 1996 coin show, where he noticed the short 1 in the date and the numerals close together. A bigger surprise was the Script 8 as part of the date. A bold die crack at star 2 turns upward and runs parallel to Liberty's nose, ending near star 5. That crack likely foreshadows the die's demise, although it is less prominent on most surviving examples than on this coin. The reverse die is distinctive, with a stray upper-left serif of U in UNITED floating left of the primary U. This AU50 example is not only the discovery coin, it is the finest of six known examples and unquestionably a highlight of the Classic gold assemblage within The John W. McCloskey Collection.
