Description
Bold 1836 Third Head Half Eagle, MS61 NGC
1836 $5 MS61 NGC. Breen-6510, Third Head, McCloskey 3-C, R.2. The tall 1 in the date is recut at the peak, and the 8 is also repunched. The only "Third Head" variety for the year, which is subtly distinguished from the First and Second Heads by a broader, less curved bust truncation and slightly different curls above LIB in LIBERTY. This crisply struck piece possesses extensive luster and only moderately abraded fields. A small contact mark on the obverse rim at 4 o'clock is of little consequence. Struck from perfect dies.(#8174)Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25RY, PCGS# 8174, GSID# 8864)
