Description
1836 Classic Five, MS63
A Remarkable High-End Example
1836 $5 MS63 NGC. CAC. Third Head, Breen-6510, McCloskey 3-C,
R.2. The 3 in the date is high (about level with the 8 and 6)
and the 6 is distant from the curl above. The date is widely
spaced. On the reverse the horizontal width of the tip of the olive
branch about covers the lateral distance from the center of the D
in the denomination to the period following.Collectors will have little problem locating an 1836 half eagle as long as they are willing to settle for a circulated example through AU58. A Mint State specimen can be located through MS62 with a bit of patience, but higher-grade coins will be challenging..
The current Select coin is remarkably struck throughout; indeed, one is tempted to say "fully struck." The exceptionally clean fields give the central motifs a medal-like appearance, and both sides display a light reddish-gold color with no mentionable abrasions or defects. This is without doubt a high-end coin for the grade that will satisfy the most discriminating collector. Census: 24 in 63, 10 finer (9/11).(Registry values: P1)
Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25RY, PCGS# 8174, GSID# 8864)
Metal: 89.92% Gold, 10.08% Copper
Weight: 8.36 grams
AGW: 0.24169oz
