Description

Aesthetically Pleasing 1836 McCloskey 4-D Classic Half Eagle

1836 $5 MS63 NGC. Second Head, Large Date. Breen-6509, McCloskey 4-D, R.3. The 1836 boasts the second highest mintage (553,147 pieces) in the short-lived Classic Half Eagle series. It is also the second most common issue after the first-year 1834 Plain 4, and, as such, the present example should be of obvious importance to Mint State type collectors. This is a lovely, original example with rich orange-gold overtones and deeply set green-gold undertones. The strike is expectantly sharp for a P-mint example of this type, and the frosty finished surfaces possess a typical number of wispy abrasions for the Select BU grade level. An attractive coin.
