Description

1836 Second Head Five Dollar, MS63
Seldom Seen Finer

1836 $5 MS63 PCGS. Breen-6509, McCloskey 4-D, R.2. Second Head, Large Date. This Select Classic Head five is highly attractive, showing semiprooflike yellow-gold fields and well-struck, frosty devices that exhibit minor weakness only on the left shield border. The surfaces show only light field chatter that determines the grade, with few overt marks.

Most Uncirculated examples of this issue grade no finer than MS62. Typically, collectors only choose to acquire a single example of the issue for type or date purposes, although there are nine different varieties for the more ambitious specialists, using the John McCloskey table. McCloskey 4-D is one of the most plentiful of these varieties, ideal for adding a high-end coin to a collection without breaking the bank. All 1836 varieties are available in at least some capacity save for McCloskey 7-F, which is an R.7 rarity.
