1836 Second Head Five Dollar, MS63
    Underrated Type, Seldom Seen Finer

1836 $5 MS63 PCGS. Second Head, Large Date, Breen-6509, McCloskey 4-D, R.2. The eye appeal is blatant on this Select Gem Classic Head five, one of the more frequently encountered varieties of the 1836, although most collectors only choose to pursue a single nice example for the type; few pursue a complete variety set. Nine varieties are documented for the 1836 Classic Head fives according to the John McCloskey classification scheme, and yet the Guide Book lists no varieties at all. The Classic Head series is one with many rewards and many challenges. After the Mint reduced the net gold content of coinage and introduced the new design signifying the change, mintage figures increased dramatically over the old Capped Head half eagles. The 1836 was struck to the extent of 553,000-plus pieces, less than the 1834 Classic Head and more than the 1835s. Nonetheless, most Mint State pieces are in the lower Uncirculated grades. This honey-gold Select example has bright, semiprooflike fields, and the surfaces show only light field chatter that determines the grade, with few overt marks. The strike is sharper through the centers than often seen on the type, with minor softness confined to the eagle's left (facing) wing and the shield border. Population: 11 in 63, 19 finer (7/12).(Registry values: P1) (NGC ID# 25RY, PCGS# 8174)
