Description

Gorgeous 1836 Half Eagle, MS64
Breen-6509, McCloskey 4-C

1836 $5 MS64 PCGS. Breen-6509, McCloskey 4-C, R.3. Second Head, Large Date. Attributed by the 6 in the date centered under the curl, the lack of a bud on the branch and an eagle's tongue, 50% of the 5 in the denomination under the feather, and 70% of the D under the branch (John McCloskey, "A Study of Classic Half Eagles, 1834-1838" in America's Gold Coinage, ANS Coinage of the Americas Conference, November 1989).
Both sides of this near-Gem are awash in gorgeous frosty luster, and an attentive strike brings out bold definition on the design elements. Peach-gold surfaces reveal just a few minute marks that preclude a higher grade. Outstanding in all respects. Population: 16 in 64, 2 finer (6/07).
