Description

Lustrous 1836 Five Dollar
MS64, Breen-6508, McCloskey 5-D

1836 $5 MS64 PCGS. Breen-6508, Second Head, Small Date, McCloskey 5-D, R.3. The variety is confirmed by the wide rounded end to the truncation, the double forelock, the 1 in the date at the same level as the 8, and the large 5 in the denomination.
The 1836 half eagle, showing a mintage of 553,147 business strikes, is the second most common date of the type after the 1834, Plain 4 (Jeff Garrett and Ron Guth, 2006).
This near-Gem specimen displays lustrous yellow-gold surfaces laced with hints of light tan. The design features are well defined throughout. A few minuscule obverse handling marks prevents Gem status. Population: 16 in 64, 2 finer (12/08).(Registry values: P1)
