Description

Attractive 1836 Classic Head Five Dollar MS64

1836 $5 MS64 PCGS. Breen-6508, Second Head, Small Date, McCloskey 5-D, R.3. The 1836 has the second highest mintage (553,147 pieces) in the short-lived Classic Half Eagle series. It is also the second most common issue after the 1834 Plain 4, and, as such, this pleasingly frosty example should be of obvious importance to high grade type collectors. Green-gold surfaces are well struck with tinges of subtle orange patina at the margins. Wispy abrasions are primarily confined to the fields and a small alloy stain is noted between the D in UNITED and the eagle's wing on the reverse border. It has been nearly five years since we have been offer an 1836 Half Eagle of similar quality. Population: 16 in 64, 1 finer (12/04).
