Description
Stunning 1836 Classic Head Five, MS 64 PCGS
1836 $5 MS 64 PCGS. This issue boasts a respectable mintage of more than 500,000 coins and survivors are available with patience through the lower Mint State grades. Collectors who are fortunate enough to locate a near-Gem representative must, however, treat the coin with the respect that is due an important condition rarity. In addition to its technical superiority, the coin that we highlight here shows awe-inspiring eye appeal that would do justice to an even higher grade. The yellow-gold surfaces are thickly frosted and both sides show pleasing green-gold tints at select angles. The boldly struck surfaces are free of distractions with the exception of a few trivial abrasions in the left reverse field. Although we have not seen the other examples that have been similarly graded, we feel confident in calling this coin one of the most attractive 1836 half eagles in today's market. Population: 11 in 64, only 1 finer (12/99).Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25RY, PCGS# 8174, GSID# 8864)
