Description

1837 HM-2 Five Dollar, MS63
Lustrous and Well Struck

1837 $5 HM-2, High R.3, MS63 NGC. The 1837 is an underappreciated date, scarcer than implied by its production of 207,121 pieces. Three die marriages exist, and HM-2 is the most available, yet it has fewer survivors than several early half eagle varieties. HM-2 is attributed by a single forehead curl and a Block 8 instead of a Script 8 within the date. The present caramel-gold coin displays dynamic luster and features a bold strike. A reed impression is on Liberty's lower cheek, and the upper reverse field shows a smattering of tiny marks, but the remainder of the coin shows minimal signs of contact.
