Description

1837 HM-3 Half Eagle, MS61
Rare Date in Mint State

1837 $5 HM-3, R.4, MS61 NGC. Green-gold surfaces contain minor abrasions in the fields of both sides. Weakness is limited to the uppermost obverse hair strands. The present HM-3 die marriage is of similar scarcity to the HM-1 and HM-2, and is the only variety with a Block 8 in the date. This date is scarcer overall than its earlier Philadelphia counterparts. Mint State examples, like the present offering, are downright rare. NGC Census: 25 in 61, 31 finer (2/26).
