Description
1837 Classic Five, McCloskey 2-B
Well-Defined Near-Mint Example
1837 $5 Large Date, Block 8, MS64 PCGS Secure. Breen-6512,
McCloskey 2-B, R.2. A richly frosted, softly lustrous Classic
Head half eagle that displays pinpoint definition throughout the
smooth, nearly mark-free surfaces. Only a few insignificant luster
grazes are noticed on the obverse, and the only mentionable
distraction on the reverse is a wispy, vertical scratch through the
eagle's beak. The 1837 is quite scarce in Choice Mint State and
definitively rare any finer. While the issue used to bring little
or no premium over the more-available issues that precede it,
recent Mint State appearances have put an end to that trend. In their Encyclopedia of U.S. Gold Coins, Jeff Garrett and Ron Guth explained: "Despite a seemingly high mintage, this is actually a semi-scarce date, with a raw rarity on par with that of the 1838-D. Examples up to About Uncirculated are relatively easy to find, but Mint State examples are decidedly rare." The last MS64 example we offered was more than nine years ago. Housed in a PCGS Secure holder. Population: 9 in 64 (1 in 64+), 4 finer (10/17).
