Description

1838 HM-1 Half Eagle, MS63
Final Classic Head Issue

1838 $5 HM-1, R.3, MS63 NGC. The quickest attribution feature for this variety is the repunched 5 in the denomination, 5 D. The D in the denomination is partly below the branch stem on this variety, and is fully below the stem on the other variety of this issue. Daryl Haynor estimates a total population of 700 1838 half eagles that is split just about equally between the two varieties, despite comments of earlier authors. Haynor also observes that HM-1 accounts for about one-third of the Mint State population of all 1838 half eagles. While scattered marks are expected at the MS63 grade level, this piece has frosty light yellow luster and bold design motifs. Census: 19 in 63 (1 in 63+), 7 finer (6/23).
