Description
1838 HM-2 Five Dollar, MS61
Scarce Philadelphia Emission
1838 $5 HM-2, R.3, MS61 NGC. The final-year 1838 Classic
half eagle is scarcer than suggested by its mintage of 286,588
pieces. Just two die marriages exist, and both are challenging,
particularly in Mint State. This well-struck representative offers
apricot-gold toning and plentiful luster. We note a narrow mark
below star 8 and a diagonal mark near the right shield corner.Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25S4, Variety PCGS# 765247, Base PCGS# 8176, GSID# 376251)
