Description

1838 HM-2 Half Eagle, MS61
Final Classic Date

1838 $5 HM-2, R.3, MS61 PCGS. Despite a mintage of 286,588 pieces, the 1838 is surprisingly scarce. The two varieties are typically attributed by the branch stem, which is larger on HM-1 than on HM-2. This sun-gold representative displays bright luster across design elements. The strike is crisp except on star 6. Marks are few aside from an unobtrusive line from the cheekbone to the field near the lips.
