Description
Lustrous, Well Struck 1838 Classic Five, MS63
1838 $5 MS63 NGC. Breen-6515, Small Arrows, Large 5, McCloskey 2-B, R.2. Final year of the Classic Head half eagle, a type which was only produced from 1834 through 1838. The 1838 was not saved in any significant numbers as the early years were, and it is rarely located in mint condition. This example has frosted surfaces and is unusually well struck for the Classic type, which is normally soft in the centers. The coin displays rich orange-golden color and the surfaces are nicely preserved with only a few small marks for the grade. Census: 15 in 63, 11 finer (5/08).From The Charleston Collection.(Registry values: P1)
