Description
1838 HM-2 Half Eagle, MS63+
Final Classic Half Eagle Issue
1838 $5 MS63+ PCGS. HM-2, R.3. This Select Mint State 1838
half eagle is boldly defined with brilliant yellow luster and soft,
frosty mint surfaces. Both sides exhibit scattered surface marks
that are consistent with the grade. A line of planchet roughness
extends from the top arrow head up to the right, through the E of
AMERICA. The two known varieties of 1838 half eagles are about
equal in rarity despite Walter Breen's assertion that the present
variety is much scarcer. In Mint State grades, HM-2 is more
plentiful. Population: 20 in 63 (3 in 63+), 23 finer
(3/20).(Registry values: P1)Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25S4, PCGS# 8176, GSID# 8868)
