Description

Beautiful Gem Uncirculated 1838 Classic Head Five Dollar

1838 MS 65 NGC.. Large Arrows, Small 5. Breen-6514. Also diagnostic to this more common of two die pairings for the date, the TES in STATES is closely spaced. According to Breen, many of the pieces coined in 1838 bore the dates 1836 and 1837. This luxuriant example is boldly defined in every nook and cranny, with a slight reddish tinge overall and a thick overlay of mint frost. Several dozen Uncirculated examples are known of this final year Classic Head issue, but the vast majority fall under the MS 62 to MS 64 grade range. Even more important than the rarity of this particular issue as a Gem, the population of MS 65 and better examples for the entire type certified by PCGS at the close of 1999 was just 11 pieces, six MS 65s and five MS 66s. Needless to say, a terrific opportunity for the advanced gold type collector. Population: 2 in 65, 1 finer (12/99).
