    Description

    Scarce AU 1838-C Half Eagle

1838-C $5 AU50 NGC. Breen-6517, Normal 5, Variety 1-A, R.4. Two die varieties of the 1838-C Classic half eagles are known. Breen described these two varieties as Normal 5 and Repunched 5, but failed to mention an unerringly simple attribution point. On this Normal 5 variety, the left-most leaf pair is distant from U of UNITED, while the Repunched 5 has the lower leaf joined to the left curve of U. This green-gold piece is sharp at the centers with flat stars and weak lettering on the reverse, typical of most or all that are known. Considerable luster remains with lightly abraded surfaces.(Registry values: P5) (NGC ID# 25S5, PCGS# 8177)
