1838-C $5 AU53 NGC. Breen-6516, Variety 1-B, R.5. The 5 in the denomination is repunched. The scarcer of the two die marriages known for this elusive first-year Charlotte Mint issue. The reverse die has a heavy bisecting crack between 1:30 and 7:30. A yellow-gold piece with ample luster and only a few minor marks on the upper reverse field. Census: 6 in 53, 23 finer (4/09).(Registry values: P5)
