Description
Popular and Rare Very Choice AU 1838-C Classic Five Dollar
1838-C $5 AU58 NGC. Although this first-year C-mint Half Eagle is not known for sharp striking definition, the present example displays bold overall detail that wanes slightly over a few of the obverse star centrils. Traces of a semi-prooflike finish are evident at most angles, and the color is an attractive blend of green-gold and orange-gold shades. Typically abraded for the grade as well as the issue with a lamination (as struck) on the reverse near the uppermost arrowhead. There is another faint lamination on the obverse through star 10. The '38-C is typically offered in grades no finer than VF, and AU survivors number just 6-8 coins (per Winter). NGC and PCGS combined have certified just two coins in AU58, with a mere three Uncirculated pieces finer (1/02).Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25S5, PCGS# 8177, GSID# 8881)
