Description

1838-C Half Eagle, AU58
Far Above Average

1838-C $5 AU58 NGC. Normal 5, McCloskey 1-A, Variety 1, R.4. Although this first-year C-mint half eagle is not known for sharp striking definition, the present example displays bold overall detail that wanes slightly over a few of the obverse star centrils. Traces of a semi-prooflike finish are evident at most angles, and the color is an attractive blend of green-gold and orange-gold shades. Typically abraded for the grade as well as the issue with a lamination (as struck) on the reverse near the uppermost arrowhead. There is another faint lamination on the obverse through star 10. The '38-C is typically offered in grades no finer than VF, and AU survivors number just six to eight coins (per Winter). The average certified grade is XF40. NGC and PCGS combined have certified just 11 coins in AU58, with a mere five Uncirculated pieces finer (10/16).
