1838-C $5 HM-1, High R.4 -- Saltwater Damage -- PCGS Genuine. AU
Details. The Charlotte Mint opened in 1838, and struck only
quarter eagles and half eagles that year. The five dollar mintage
amounted to only 17,179 pieces. Nonetheless, two die marriages are
known. HM-1, with a normal 5 in 5D, is slightly more available than
HM-2, though both varieties are very scarce. This sharp olive-gold
example displays distributed tiny marks, and the surfaces are
evenly microgranular from its century-plus stint at the bottom of
the Atlantic Ocean.
