Description

1838-C HM-2 Half Eagle, VF25
Scarce Die Marriage, One-Year Type

1838-C $5 HM-2, R.5, VF25 NGC. Two varieties exist for Charlotte's first and only Classic Head half eagle issue. HM-2 is the scarcer of two die marriages that employ the same obverse die, paired with two short-lived reverses. The 1838-C has the lowest mintage of any Classic Head five from any mint. Rich olive-gold color displays orange accents that encompass this pleasing VF example. Struck from lapped dies, the lower-left shield and eagle's leg are weak from die collapse. A bold rim-to-rim die crack runs diagonally across the reverse, tangent to the right (facing) wing, through the shield center, to the edge near U of UNITED. This terminal die crack is seen on virtually all HM-2 half eagles.
