    Description

    1838-C Five Dollar, VF35
    First Year of Facility

1838-C $5 VF35 PCGS. CAC. Breen-6517, Variety 1, R.4. The half eagle became the flagship denomination of the Charlotte and Dahlonega Mints, both of which began coinage in 1838. The 1838-C comes in two die varieties, which share the same obverse. We know Variety 1 was struck first since examples of Variety 2 develop a crack through star 5. The present orange-gold piece is minimally abraded and shows moderate wear on the wingtips. Unimportant obverse laminations are noted near stars 2 and 4.(Registry values: P5) (NGC ID# 25S5, PCGS# 8177)
