Description

1838-C XF 40. Repunched 5. The 1838-C is the second rarest issue in the series of Classic fives (second only to the Crosslet 4). It is the only classic half eagle struck in the Charlotte mint, and as such is a very popular coin with collectors. It is extremely difficult to locate a '38-C in strict XF condition, and most are weakly struck on the hair curls, as is this coin. As a later state of the Repunched 5 variety this piece shows the rim to rim diagonal die crack and faint evidence of repunching on the 5. Excessive die polishing has removed much of the eagle's feathers on the left side of the bird. The surfaces show numerous small marks, but none deserve individual attention. Trends $4,600.
