Description
1838-C XF 40 Polished. The 1838-C is the second rarest issue in the series of Classic half eagles (second only to the Crosslet 4). It is the only Classic five struck in the Charlotte mint, and as such is a very popular coin with collectors. It is very difficult to locate a '38-C in strict XF condition, and most are weakly struck on the hair curls, as is this piece. The surfaces are unnaturally bright from having been cleaned, this being the most detracting feature on the coin, but over the years a significant amount of reddish patina has accumulated over both sides, subduing the effects of the cleaning somewhat. Otherwise, there are only a few small abrasions scattered about each side. Still, a rare offering and sure to be of interest to many gold collectors.
