Description

1838-C Five-Dollar with Repunched 5

1838-C XF 45 Obverse Scratched. Repunched 5. The 1838-C is the second rarest issue in the series of Classic fives (second only to the Crosslet 4). It is the only Classic half eagle struck in the Charlotte mint, and as such is always a popular coin with collectors. It is extremely difficult to locate a '38-C in strict XF condition, and most are weakly struck on the hair curls, as is this coin. As a later state of the Repunched 5 variety, this piece shows the rim-to-rim diagonal die crack and faint evidence of repunching on the 5. Excessive die polishing has removed much of the eagle's feathers on the left side of the bird. The only marks of note are several scratches in the right obverse field between stars 11 and 13. Unfortunate, but not a flaw that would keep a determined collector from purchasing this desirable item at the right price.
