Description

1838-C MS 61 PCGS. Well struck for the issue with a very sharp obverse and good detail on the reverse. The surfaces are lightly marked and covered with breathtaking, deep, original orange-gold color. This coin's overall level of eye appeal is just superb and it really needs to be seen in person to be appreciated. One of the highlights of the North Georgia Collection and a personal favorite of this cataloger.
There are just two 1838-C half eagles known in Mint State and one of these, a superb MS 63, is impounded in the Harry Bass Collection. The North Georgia Collection specimen was earlier lot 576 in Stack's June 1994 sale (where it realized $39,600) and it was earlier lot 1981 in Abe Kosoff's Thomas Melish sale, April 1956. In our opinion, it would not be hype to state that once this coin is placed in a collection, the opportunity to acquire another Uncirculated 1838-C half eagle may not occur in our lifetime.
