Description

1838-D HM-1 Half Eagle, AU55
Stunning Citrus-Orange Highlights

1838-D $5 HM-1, R.3, AU55 NGC. Green-gold surfaces are highlighted in the protected areas with tropical citrus-orange, creating stunning contrast. An old, dull scratch from the back of the ribbon to the field between stars 11 and 12 provides the only abrasion of note on this lovely half eagle.

The 1838-D half eagle is the only Dahlonega half eagle issue of this type, and the 1839-D quarter eagle represents the only emission of this design from that lower denomination. The popularity of the Dahlonega Mint, combined with the 1838-D's status as the only Classic Head half eagle issue from that Mint, provides a tinderbox and matches for collector demand.

While two die marriages exist for the 1839-D quarter eagle, the 1838-D half eagle's production was accomplished with just a single die marriage. Even more impressive is the relative mintages of these two issues: 20,583 for the half eagle, and 13,674 for the quarter eagle. Even still, the 1838-D half eagle's mintage is less than one-tenth that of the lowest mintage Philadelphia issue, the 1837 at 207,121 coins.
