Description
Exceptional AU 55 1838-D Classic Five
1838-D AU 55 PCGS. A choice example of this very desirable Dahlonega issue. Sharply struck with well defined hair details over the ear of Liberty as well as complete plumage on the eagle. This issue is well known for heavy circulation (see the lot of VG and Fine pieces above) and heavy abrasions. This piece has neither. The bright golden-orange surfaces are virtually unscathed with only one shallow scratch noted in the lower left obverse field. Also, what appears as a defect is merely die clashing at the juncture of the neck and throat of Liberty. Just missing the Condition Census, this is one of the finest appearing 1838-D fives we have seen in several years.Coin Index Numbers: (PCGS# 8178, GSID# 8882)
