Description
Lustrous AU 55 1838-D Half Eagle
1838-D AU 55 PCGS. This third example is very sharply detailed with much of the original Mint luster visible beneath light green-gold color; a touch of rose can be seen in the left obverse field.Like many first-year issue coins, the 1838-D half eagle is more available in higher grades than one might think, due primarily to pieces being saved as novelties. An estimated three dozen are known in the various AU grades as well as 6 to 8 in Mint State. The level of demand for this issue is great enough, however, that nearly any high grade piece that is offered for sale is readily absorbed.
