Description

Rare and Popular Mint State 1838-D

1838-D $5 MS 61 PCGS. Very well struck and frosty with attractive light green-gold and yellowish coloration. There are some scattered marks on the surfaces as one would typically expect from a coin in this grade. The most noticeable of these is a thin, fine horizontal scratch on the lower part of the bust. A very pleasing coin for the grade.
Like most first year of issue coins, 1838-D half eagles were saved as souvenirs. There are as many as 175-200 pieces known, with well over half of these grading VF to XF. In AU, the 1838-D is more plentiful than generally assumed, with around 40-45 survivors. Choice, original AU coins are very scarce and the 1838-D is a rare issue in Mint State, with an estimated population of seven to nine coins.
From the Chestatee Collection.
