Description
Condition Census 1838-D Half Eagle
1838-D $5 MS 62 PCGS. Bright and very flashy with dazzling mint luster. This issue often comes with good eye appeal, but this particular coin is notable for having just about the best luster we can recall having seen on an 1838-D half eagle. The strike is very sharp while the surfaces show light, minor scuffs. For the sake of future identification, we note a small area of coppery toning above the right wing of the eagle. This coin is probably just a hair finer than the similarly graded piece we offered as lot 6518 in our June 1999 sale, which brought $33,350 and had earlier realized $40,250 in our 1999 FUN sale.We are aware of the following 1838-D half eagles that grade Mint State:
1. Duke's Creek Collection, Ex: Stack's session of Auction '84: 1329; Arthur Montgomery Collection; Stack's 10/83: 90; Coles Collection. Graded MS 62 by PCGS.
2. This coin, Ex: Chestatee Collection. Graded MS 62 by PCGS.
3. Heritage 6/99: 6518, Ex: Heritage 1/99: 7674, North Georgia Collection. Graded MS 62 by PCGS.
4. Texas dealer, 5/99. Graded MS 62 by NGC.
5. Chestatee Collection (the coin offered above). Graded MS 61 by PCGS.
6. Private collection, Ex: Heritage 4/96: 476. Graded MS 61 by NGC.
7. Heritage 2/99: 6230; Ex: Miller Collection. Graded MS 61 by NGC.
The current PCGS Population Report (June 1999) states that three other coins have been graded MS 62. These could very well be resubmissions of one or more of the coins listed above.
From the Chestatee Collection.
